Di Director-General of Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), Dr John Asein, don talk say DJs wey dey play songs without correct license or permission from the owner fit go jail for 5 years or pay N1 million fine.
According to wetin NAN report, Dr Asein yarn this one for one advisory wey dem drop on Wednesday for Abuja.
Di oga NCC say dem don notice say some DJs just dey play music for public without collecting correct copyright license from the people wey own di songs or their authorised body dem wey dey collect money for them (wey dem dey call CMOs).
According to the Copyright Act of 2022, section 9 and 12, na only the person wey get the song or sound recording get right to play am, perform am, or share am to people.
“If you do any of those things without the permission of the owner, na copyright wahala be that,” him tok.
“If dem catch you, you fit pay N1 million or go prison for at least five years or even both.”
Dr Asein talk say whether na for hotel, club, event centre, garden or recreation area, once DJ play music there, e count as public performance and communication to the public and na only the copyright owner get that right.
He come advise DJs make dem do the right thing – collect proper license and pay royalty to the correct CMO before dem begin play music for public.
He still warn say NCC no go hesitate to investigate, arrest and carry any DJ wey break the law go court.
Copyright matter still be serious issue for Naija, and even though the law clear, how dem go track all DJs across di country still be big challenge for NCC hand.
